What did Hunter Moore do and where is Hunter Moore now in 2022?
Who is “The Most Hated Man on the Internet” Hunter Moore?
Hunter Moore was a self-proclaimed “king of revenge porn” and a proud proponent of online bullying. He created the website IsAnyoneUp.com, which featured nude and sexually explicit photos, mostly of women, usually submitted by their exes without their consent. The title “The Most Hated Man on the Internet” was bestowed upon Moore in a 2012 Rolling Stone profile, and it’s a title he wore proudly.
What is IsAnyoneUp?
IsAnyoneUp was one of the most popular revenge porn sites ever. The site didn’t just post nude and sexually explicit photos without the consent of the photo subject—Moore also proudly included the subject’s full names, employers, social media handles and where they live. In one instance, he even published photos of one woman’s children in addition to her nudes. Whenever asked to remove images, he usually responded with some variation of “LOL.” Photos on the site weren’t explicitly limited to revenge porn, however: There were many photos visitors submitted themselves, as well as some that Moore reportedly took himself of women (with Rolling Stone noting that at least one woman who Moore photographed intimately was under the influence of cocaine and possibly alcohol at the time).
What happened to Hunter Moore?
Moore created IsAnyoneUp, the most popular revenge porn site the Internet had ever seen at that point. Photos of mostly women were submitted without their consent, and at least one woman featured in The Most Hated Man on the Internet said she was coerced into submitting explicit photos through threats. As it turned out, those weren’t Moore’s only methods for accessing nude photos and sexually explicit images. Moore obtained plenty of images through hacking: He hired another man named Charles Evans to hack email accounts and steal sexually explicit content from therein. Moore would then publish the nude photos on IsAnyoneUp. One of Moore’s victims, Kayla Laws, got her mother, attorney Charlotte Laws, involved, and that eventually led to Moore’s downfall. Charlotte compiled evidence from not just Kayla, but 40 other revenge porn victims from around the globe, over the course of two years. In 2012, Charlotte handed her evidence over to the FBI, and the bureau’s Los Angeles Internet Crime division began officially investigating Moore. Moore shut IsAnyoneUp down in 2012 and sold the domain to Bullyville.com. Bullyville founder James McGibney later sued Moore for defamation after Moore allegedly called McGibney a “pedophile” and threatened to sexually assault McGibney’s wife. McGibney won a $250,000 defamation judgment against Moore. In 2014, the FBI charged Moore with aggravated identity theft, conspiracy and unauthorized access to a protected computer. In 2015, Moore pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and aiding and abetting in the unauthorized access of a computer. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, plus a $2,000 fine and an offensively paltry $145 victim restitution fee.
Where is Hunter Moore now?
Moore was released from prison in May 2017 and was on three years of supervised probation, which ended in 2021. In 2018, Moore wrote a memoir called Is Anyone Up?! The Story of Revenge Porn. In the book, he expresses essentially zero remorse for the lives he disrupted and attempted to ruin with IsAnyoneUp.
Is Hunter Moore on Twitter?
Though it’s wholly incredible that anyone would be interested in following Hunter Moore, he does still have an active Twitter account. In one video posted to his timeline, he admits he was “a little p***k” during the site’s heyday. In another post, he complains about “cancel culture” ruining his fun. In yet another tweet, Moore complains about another documentary from Vice making him look “evil” and writing in part that he donates a lot to charity, adding, “I mean I just created a platform and the one who posted on my site was your loved one back then, so why blame me and not your partner who you trusted?” There seems to be little remorse nor accountability for the nude photos that were hacked, nor self-awareness that both he and the scorned partners can both do terrible things. Ironically, though unsurprisingly, he seems very sensitive about his reputation.
